Formula Feeding
Breast milk is the best food for babies. However, some mothers can not breastfeed because of your health or other reasons. If you decide to feed your baby formula, here are some important points you should know.
The formula is ready for serving, or in liquid or powder to mix with water. Call your health professional to find out how much and what type of formula your baby needs. Newborns eat 2-3 ounces of formula every 3-4 hours. To feed your baby formula:
- Fill the bottle with the correct amount of formula. If you use a bottle with a plastic bag, squeeze all the air after filling so as not to cause the baby gas. Never warm the bottle in the microwave because it could get too hot for baby.
- Tilt the bottle to the teat is always full of milk. Place the nipple in the baby’s mouth. Never prop the bottle an object or place the baby in the crib with a bottle because it could choke on the formula.
- After feeding, wash with soap and hot water bottles, teats and other equipment you have used to prepare formula.
