It referred to as fetal alcohol syndrome to the set of abnormalities that occur in the newborn, whose origin the consumption of alcohol by mothers during pregnancy.

While several decades ago, experts recommend zero tolerance regarding alcohol intake in pregnancy, even today it remains the most common cause of mental retardation known non-genetic in the United States, where statistics show that annually about 40 thousand born babies with down syndrome.

Children who are born with this condition have a number of characteristic defects, among which include small head and brain, facial abnormalities and defects in other bodies, as well as presenting anomalies of neurodevelopment, including deterioration of fine motor skills, abnormal gait, sensorineural hearing loss and poor coordination between the eyes and hands.
